The great success of Britian in the Olympics got me thinking as to why it has taken a century for us to up our game and beat Europe. I think a lot of it has to be down to the investment made due to the national lottery funding making it a rewarding career to now be a professional athlete. Swimming, shooting, sailing and rowing to name but a few have never got the sort of advertising sponsorship that sports such as football or rugby have enjoyed so any investment is going to go far. Like most things in life invest and you will see results later on.
I am just hoping that the investment continues to be made and also focused to the sports that are suffering so we can make a real statement in 2012. Hopefully it won’t become too political and long-term investment will continue because you know the moment politicians get involved it will be all about vote winning and not what is best for our athletes.
